The Belvac 595K Base Reformer is essential for lightweighting in the canmaking process. The Reformer module can be coupled to the Belvac Modular Necking System or the turrets can be installed in 595K Fixed Base machines. It is also available as a stand alone machine on a modular base.
The unit uses the same gear drive and star wheel pocket pitch circle diameter as the standard necking turret. Available for flanged or unflanged cans, no contact is made with the cut edge of the can, which eliminates potential damage. Tooling heads for the Reformer are interchangeable with reprofiler tooling and oversized bearings in the tooling ram assembly significantly extend operations between required maintenance.
The 595K Base Reformer places a groove inside the dome of the can to reduce the tendency for the stand radius to unroll under internal pressure, which can allow the dome to collapse. The reformed groove inside the dome can be adjusted in height from the base and in overall diameter to provide the desired dome growth or buckle strength. An increase of 20 lbf/in2 in buckle strength is typical. There is no change in can height or axial (column) strength.
The forming roller (tooling) has a 0.040 in. radius to minimize any tendency to create metal exposure. New wear rings support the forming roller and reduce running temperature. Inexpensive and quick maintenance is enhanced by the use of pressout "top hat" shaped bushings for the "H" link. Truncated receptacles provide easier can release prior to transfer to the transfer star wheel.
The Belvac 595K Base Reformer tooling assembly maximizes dome reversal and drop strength giving canmakers the ability to use thinner coil stock.
HR - The height from the base of the stand diameter to the center of the reform groove radius. DR - The diameter measured across the reform groove. Also referred to as penetration diameter. RR - The radius of the reform groove. DS - The stand diameter.
